“The Painter and the Thief” (Amazon)

If you are looking for a provocative film, one begging for post-screening discussion, and possibly upbeat in a perverse kind of way, then this is the film for you. It is a documentary that reads like a fictional film (my hunch is that some version of it will emerge next year as one, though). Filmed in Norway it is about the strange relationship that grows between a young, fairly unknown Czech artist (living in Norway) and the drug addicted thief who stole two of her paintings from a gallery show in Oslo. As you can imagine, there are a number of surprises. Sidebar observations include how much more enlightened the Norwegians are about incarceration than we are. Judith C. the friend who recommended the film sent me this link which you can read before or after watching–or both! Let me know your thoughts–very curious about your reactions. https://www.thepainterandthethief.com/directorsstatement
