“Fighting With My Family” (Netflix)

Dwayne Johnson produced this film, and it is as likable as he is. It is the true story of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) British Superstar “Paige” and her rise to fame. Professional wrestling is not my choice for entertainment–it always seemed ludicrous and cheesy. But I wasn’t aware of the rigor and training that goes into becoming good at this performance “sport.” Like boxing, professional wrestling has been an escape route from poverty. But unlike professional boxing, WWE wrestling is performance. Moves seem to be choreographed and serious injury is minimal. Still, there is always risk and people do get hurt, but that aspect is minimized to maintain the upbeat tone of the film. Paige’s quirky family seems to relish their marginality and it all feels like it is pretty true to the real story. At the end we get to see the real people (always love that) which is great fun.
