“Host” (Shudder)

Contributing reviewer is Bruce Pierini: long time friend, anthropologist, polyglot and horror movie fan. Bruce and his husband, Wayne, live in Sacramento. He is currently a trial subscriber (free for seven days) to the movie app Shudder.

This is a non-bloody (almost entirely) horror movie that met the prime critierion for horror flicks — it’s scary. It also immerses the viewer in the “fun.” Not throughout but long and intense enough to be worth the hour’s Zoom seance! It’s set all on Zoom where several young women and a man (mostly British) get together on Zoom for a seance. If you like the genre it’s one of the better, more imaginative ones offered this summer (NYT). If you Zoom a lot like I do, it’s particularly enjoyable. The one disappointment is again mostly women who are being frightened by the supernatural forces. Would have been a fresh approach to use more than the one occasional male. No spoiler here — just that these spiritual seekers get more than what they asked for!
